knowing what to say
yesterday, Matt and I were in the backyard putting our new grill together while Connor was playing around in his little pool. It was way past his nap time, but for the most part he was still being pretty good and having so much fun in the water that we let him stay up and play. After a while, he started getting obnoxious. He kept trying to offer me food and asking what I wanted. Out of frustration one time, I asked him, "Do you know what I want, Connor?" (the answer was going to be 'a boy who listens'). He looks and me with confidence and says, "love. you want love mommy." I just couldn't be frustrated after that. I gave him a kiss and told him he was totally right.
so considerate
yesterday morning Matt and Connor sat down at the table to eat some strawberry pancakes while i was finishing up the last couple of pancakes in the kitchen. Matt started in on his food and Connor looked at him and said, "Wait, dad. You have to wait for mommy." It was cute and I told him that it was very sweet of him to wait for me, but that they could go ahead and get started without me. Connor was insistent, though and wouldn't eat (or let Matt eat) until I had sat down with them. When I finally sat down, he said, "Ok Dad, now we can eat."

boys will be boys
I picked up Connor from school last night and the teacher, fighting to keep a smile off her face, said she had something to tell me. Apparently Connor and another child decided to whip out their hoses and water the grass while they were outside playing. The teachers must have had a difficult time scolding the boys over it because Connor was all smiles while I tried my best to tell him that wasn't something that was ok to do.

I'll Fix It Myself
Connor has a small battery-powered racetrack which went dead. He asked me to fix it while I was in the middle of something, so I couldn't. Being the impatient sort, he figured out how to pop off the battery cover himself, then went into the kitchen and got the right size batteries (2 AA) and replaced them in the device. "I fixed it myself, Dad."
